This is not hyperbole. Arabica and Robusta beans are facing significant pressure from climate change. Heat stress, unpredictable rainfall patterns, and expanding pest populations are threatening global supply.

However, researchers have developed a promising solution. Credits to Kenny from Earthlings Coffee Roasters, Kuching.

They have discovered a hybrid now called as Libex, a crossover of two lesser-known coffee species: Liberica and Excelsa.

The implications are significant:

→ Demonstrates superior heat tolerance compared to conventional varieties
→ Withstands excess moisture that damages standard plants
→ Exhibits natural disease resistance
→ Scales efficiently for commercial production

Research has identified 133 distinct coffee species globally. Commercial production relies on just two. This represents an enormous untapped opportunity.

The Royal Botanic Gardens in the UK led this research initiative, testing samples sourced from Europe, Africa, and Asia.

Their conclusion: the industry needs a diversified portfolio of coffee species to maintain supply chain resilience.
