If you’re new specialty coffee and coffee brewing, this post is just the right one for you. All you need to start is a french press coffee maker which is relatively cheap in the market. Pair this with freshly ground coffee beans for french press.
Everybody have their favorite coffee brewing method. This post will explain brewing coffee using a Bodum Travel Press which is a type of French Press. There are many different recipes and techniques to brewing coffee using French Press, below is a simple guide meant for beginners.
Let’s Brew some coffee 🙂
1: What you need – A kettle, scale, electric or hand grinder, French press (travel press) and freshly roasted coffee from your favorite roaster. If you do not have a coffee grinder, just ask your favorite roaster to grind it coarse for you when you purchase it.
2: I like my brew to be strong, so I use a 1:12 coffee to water ratio, but you can also try standard 1:15 ratio. I’m using 20 g here which is about 4 table spoons of coffee if you don’t have a scale.
3: I set my brewing water temperature of 94 degC. If you don’t have a thermometer, you can boil water and let it to cool down for about 1 minute.
4: Rinse your French Press with hot water.
5: Put in your ground coffee into the French Press, gently shake it to make the coffee grounds level.
Let the coffee bloom for about 30 seconds
6: Pour a bit of water, (roughly double the amount of coffee ground) and let it bloom for about 30 seconds. After 30 seconds, gently stir with a spoon.
7: Pour more water till you have total about 240g of water. Again if you don’t have a scale, then 240g water is also about 240ml water, so use your regular water bottle to estimate total amount of water needed.
8: Close the French Press lid but do not plunge yet. Steep the coffee for 4 minutes.
9: At 4 minutes, plunge to press the coffee grounds down to the bottom.
10: Pour the coffee out into a cup.
11: Enjoy your freshly brewed coffee 🙂
* If you do not have any brewing accessory to start, fret not. You can use any server to brew the coffee and strain it out with a normal strainer. Not recommended, but you can use this method to try out and then upgrade with proper brewing accessories 🙂
